{"id":23459,"date":"2011-10-03T09:42:25","date_gmt":"2011-10-03T09:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/?p=23459"},"modified":"2021-09-10T09:42:37","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T09:42:37","slug":"panama-canal-sets-historic-tonnage-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/panama-canal-sets-historic-tonnage-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama Canal Sets Historic Tonnage Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PANAMA CITY, Panama, October 3, 2011 &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0The Panama Canal set another mark in its history books as it reached a new tonnage record\u00a0of 322.1 million Panama Canal tons (PC\/UMS) during fiscal year 2011 which concluded at midnight of September 30.\u00a0 This milestone highlights the value of Panama to world commerce.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an unprecedented achievement during the 97 years of Canal operations which proves once again the capability of Panamanians to operate and manage this important waterway for world commerce.\u00a0 My recognition and gratitude go to the Panama Canal employees for reaching this important goal,&#8221; said Panama Canal Authority Administrator\/CEO Alberto Alem\u00e1n Zubieta.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary figures showed that the Panama Canal closed Fiscal Year 2011s with 322.1 million Panama Canal tons (PC\/UMS).\u00a0 This figure represents a 7.1% increase compared\u00a0to the 300.8 million tons registered last year, and also surpasses the previous 2007 record of 312.9 million tons by 2.9%.<\/p>\n<p>According to Alem\u00e1n Zubieta, this milestone proves that &#8220;the Canal\u00b4s corporate management model has\u00a0made it possible to\u00a0continuously\u00a0improve the level of service we provide our clients while\u00a0at the same time increasing benefits to Panama.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Panama Canal\u00b4s fiscal year runs between October 1 and September 30.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Panama Canal Authority (ACP)<br \/>\n<\/strong>The ACP is the autonomous agency of the Government of Panama in charge of managing, operating and maintaining the Panama Canal.
