{"id":23786,"date":"2009-07-02T11:37:22","date_gmt":"2009-07-02T11:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/?p=23786"},"modified":"2021-09-10T11:37:33","modified_gmt":"2021-09-10T11:37:33","slug":"panama-canal-preps-for-fourth-excavation-project-under-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/panama-canal-preps-for-fourth-excavation-project-under-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama Canal Preps for Fourth Excavation Project under Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\"><em>CANAL CONTINUES FAIR, RIGOROUS AND TRANSPARENT CONTRACTING PROCESS<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\"><em>SEARCH FOR TOP-TIER FIRMS TO FOLLOW<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PANAMA CITY, Panama, July 2, 2009<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Moving ahead with its Expansion Program, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will soon solicit bids for the fourth and last dry excavation project.<\/p>\n<p>The project will be the final phase in creating a critical access channel that will link the new Pacific locks with the Canal&#8217;s existing Gaillard Cut (the narrowest stretch of the Panama Canal).<\/p>\n<p>As the second most significant contract of the Expansion Program, the scope of work will include the excavation, removal and disposal of approximately 27 million cubic meters of non-classified material. Moreover, the solicitation will call for the installation of an approximately 1.8-kilometer long backfilled cellular cofferdam water barrier and the construction of a 2.8-kilometer long impervious clay core-rock fill dam.<\/p>\n<p>Other work under this contract will include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"unIndentedList\">\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">constructing access roads<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">managing disposal site areas<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">installing a dewateringsystem to remove surface and underground water<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">implementing and managing environmental controls<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">clearing unexploded ordnances (UXOs) &#8211; remnants from former U.S. military training facilities in the Canal area, and<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"justify\">other miscellaneous tasks.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ACP expects to make construction plans, specifications and contractual requirements available by the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The release of the fourth and final dry excavation RFP is, without a doubt, a key milestone in this program. The Canal expansion continues to move on track, on budget and with steady progress,&#8221; said ACP Executive Vice President of Engineering and Program Management Jorge L.
