The new units (pictured right and below), purchased from Cheoy Lee Shipyards, Ltd., have an output capacity of 4,800 horse power and a bollard pull of more than 60 metric tons.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Canal has made some operational changes that increase efficiency and streamline operations. The ACP moved the management of its shipyard to the Canal&#8217;s Maritime Operations Division, led by ACP Executive Vice President of Operations Manuel Ben\u00edtez. The Canal has also instituted a more regular and systemized process of tug maintenance, allowing proper availability of the fleet at any given period.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pancanal.com\/eng\/pr\/press-releases\/images\/327-01-lge.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pancanal.com\/eng\/pr\/press-releases\/images\/327-01-sm.jpg\" alt=\"Panama Canal Authority Upgrades Tugboat Fleet\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>&#8220;These new tugboats are an important acquisition for the operation of the Panama Canal,&#8221; said Mr. Ben\u00edtez. &#8220;By upgrading our equipment and streamlining processes, Canal operations are improved for the benefit of our customers around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An additional 13 tugs, also purchased from Cheoy Lee Shipyards, Ltd, are scheduled to begin arriving in September 2010. These new units will come with an award-winning design, superior components, stronger engines, better clutches and advanced propulsion systems.\u00a0Overall, the ACP plans to have a total fleet of 46 tugs by 2014.
