In a ceremony Monday night, December 18, in Panama City, Panama, Secretary General of France\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Philippe Faure appointed Mr. Alem\u00e1n as \u201cKnight\u201d for his outstanding leadership.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a style=\"color: #2b85c1;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pancanal.com\/eng\/pr\/press-releases\/images\/203-lge.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"border\" style=\"border: 2px solid #2b85c1; padding: 2px; margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pancanal.com\/eng\/pr\/press-releases\/images\/203-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\u201c&lt;em&gt;Ordre national de la   L\u00e9gion d\u2019 honneur\u201d &lt;\/em&gt;or Legion of Honor\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe French government recognizes Mr. Alem\u00e1n\u2019s perceptiveness and the respect he has developed far beyond the borders of Panama in his task of managing one of the largest waterways in the world,\u201d said Secretary General Faure, who visited Panama for two days. \u201cWe are confident in the success of the Panama Canal expansion and Mr. Alem\u00e1n\u2019s qualities of leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion of Honor stands as the premier order of France.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">It is conferred upon men and women, either French citizens or foreigners, for exceptional achievements in military or civil life.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cI am deeply grateful to the French Government for the distinction. I accept the Legion of Honor on behalf of the ACP\u2019s 9,000 employees who work hard each day to serve world trade and Panama,\u201d said Mr. Alem\u00e1n. \u201cPerhaps, if not for the vision of Ferdinand de Lesseps, we would not be here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Panamanians voted on October 22, 2006 to expand the Canal, building a third lane of traffic along the waterway through the construction of a new set of locks, which will allow more traffic and double Canal capacity. An expanded Canal will benefit the people of Panama and world trade, maximizing Panama\u2019s strategic location to become the great logistics and transportation hub of the Americas.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Alberto Alem\u00e1n Zubieta has served as\u00a0Canal\u00a0Administrator\u00a0since 1996.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>About the Panama Canal Authority (ACP)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The ACP is the autonomous agency of the Government of Panama in charge of managing, operating and maintaining the Panama Canal.
