The Panama Canal welcomed representatives from the International Transport Workers\u2019 Federation (ITF) to exchange information and to discuss issues of common interest to both organizations.<\/p>\n
The meeting, which took place at the Canal Administration Building, addressed various aspects related to climate resilience and the canal’s sustainability strategy.<\/p>\n
In addition, the importance of climate resilience was analyzed recognizing that the challenges posed by the climate crisis require globally coordinated solutions.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the canal shared progress on its decarbonization strategy and the broader energy transition within the maritime industry. Particularly noteworthy was the acquisition of ten tugboats equipped with hybrid propulsion systems, a key measure to strengthening the canal\u2019s commitment to significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n
This and other ongoing initiatives aim to reduce the canal\u2019s carbon footprint across three established decarbonization standards.
\nThe meeting included participation from Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte V\u00e1squez Morales, Deputy Administrator, Eng. Ilya Espino de Marotta, Vice President for Human Capital Rub\u00e9n P\u00e9rez, Vice President of Operations Boris Moreno, Manager of Labor Benefits Planning Erick Garc\u00eda, and Sustainability Manager Estela Luck.<\/p>\n
Representing the ITF were Secretary General Stephen Cotton, Chair of the Inland Navigation Section Jacques Kerkhoff, Secretary of the Seafarers and Inland Navigation Section Fabrizio Barcellona, and Regional Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean Edgar D\u00edaz.
