The Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority has appointed engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta as Administrator of the Panama Canal for the 2026\u20132033 term, exercising the powers granted to her by the Constitution of the Republic of Panama and the Organic Law of the Panama Canal Authority.<\/p>\n
This decision follows a national and international process including the search, consultation, and evaluation focused on identifying Panamanian professionals capable of addressing the Panama Canal\u2019s current and future challenges. The selection process included rigorous assessments of candidates\u2019 knowledge and capabilities, as well as in-depth interviews designed to comprehensively evaluate their competencies, strategic vision, and leadership skills.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe legitimacy of this decision rests on the independence of the process, the technical rigor of the methodology applied, and a serious, objective institutional deliberation focused on the best interests of the Canal and the country. As with previous appointments, the Board undertook this process fully aware of the critical importance of the canal to Panama and to global trade,\u201d said Jos\u00e9 Ram\u00f3n Icaza, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority.<\/p>\n
The Board determined that Engineer Espino de Marotta possesses the experience, judgment, and capabilities necessary to lead the Panama Canal through major challenges, including water sustainability, route competitiveness, institutional modernization, operational efficiency, and the preservation of the canal\u2019s contribution to national development.<\/p>\n
Espino de Marotta holds a degree in Marine Engineering from Texas A&M University, a master\u2019s degree in Economic Engineering from Universidad Santa Mar\u00eda La Antigua, and executive education credentials from INCAE Business School and the Kellogg School of Management. She is a distinguished Panama Canal professional with more than 40 years of experience in technical, operational, and leadership roles. She previously served as Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer, leading high-impact strategic initiatives, including the Panama Canal Expansion Program, as well as key projects in water management, sustainability, and modernization. She is widely recognized for her ability to manage complex projects and represent the institution internationally.<\/p>\n
Commenting on her appointment, Engineer Espino de Marotta stated:<\/p>\n

The Board also recognized the service of the current Administrator, Dr. Ricaurte V\u00e1squez Morales, who has led the Panama Canal through an extraordinary period marked by a water crisis, a global pandemic, international supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical tensions that reshaped global trade routes. His leadership leaves behind a financially strong and competitive canal, fully prepared to undertake the projects outlined in its strategic plan.<\/p>\n
The Board further reaffirmed its message of confidence to the Panama Canal employees, customers, the international maritime community, and, above all, the people of Panama: the Panama Canal remains institutionally strong, operationally efficient, and firmly committed to serving the country, supporting global trade, and upholding the excellence for which it is recognized worldwide.<\/p>\n
