{"id":6892,"date":"2019-05-13T10:51:30","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T10:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/?p=6892"},"modified":"2021-09-03T09:30:43","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T09:30:43","slug":"panama-canal-welcomes-first-q-flex-lng-tanker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/panama-canal-welcomes-first-q-flex-lng-tanker\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama Canal Welcomes First Q-Flex LNG Tanker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Less than three years since its inauguration, the Expanded Panama Canal commemorates a milestone transit by a Q-Flex vessel, the world\u2019s second largest LNG tanker class.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Panama City, Panama, May 13, 2019<\/strong> &#8211; The Panama Canal yesterday<br \/>\nwelcomed Qatargas\u2019 Al Safliya, the first Q-Flex and the largest<br \/>\nliquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker to ever transit the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>The tanker\u2013which measures<br \/>\n315 meters in length and 50 meters in beam with an overall cargo capacity of<br \/>\n210,000 meters3 of<br \/>\nLNG\u2013transited northbound from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis transit reaffirms the Expanded Canal\u2019s ability to reshape world trade and<br \/>\noffer customers the benefits of economies of scale,\u201d said Panama Canal<br \/>\nAdministrator Jorge L. Quijano. \u201cThe Panama Canal team is grateful for the<br \/>\nindustry\u2019s continued confidence in our services and looking forward to<br \/>\nwelcoming many more Q-Flex vessels in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Q-Flex LNG tankers can now pass through the Panama Canal following an increase<br \/>\nin the maximum allowable beam for vessels transiting the Neopanamax locks.<br \/>\nImplemented in June 2018, the maximum beam allowed is 51.25 meters, up from 49<br \/>\nmeters, as measured at the outer surface of a vessel\u2019s shell plate and all<br \/>\nprotruding structures below the lock walls. Such an increase was made possible<br \/>\nas a result of the efficiencies gained by the Panama Canal\u2019s continued<br \/>\ninvestment into its operations and resources, and due to the ongoing excellence<br \/>\nand experience of its employees.<\/p>\n<p>The milestone transit also underscored the Expanded Canal\u2019s environmental<br \/>\nbenefits as a result of its ability to help vessels shorten the distance and<br \/>\nduration of their trips compared to alternate routes. In combination with Al<br \/>\nSafliya\u2019s Q-Flex class design, which allows for the 40% reduction of emissions<br \/>\nin comparison to other gas carriers, the Panama Canal and Qatargas saved nearly<br \/>\n10,000 tons of CO2 emissions<br \/>\ncompared to alternative routes, directly reducing of global emissions.<\/p>\n<p>This achievement comes less than a month after the Expanded Canal celebrated<br \/>\nits 6,000th Neopanamax vessel to transit, a milestone<br \/>\nmarked by another LNG tanker, Energy Liberty, on April 23.<\/p>\n<p>The Panama Canal is expecting to see further growth in its LNG transits<br \/>\nfollowing the new beam increase. In 2018, the Canal saw 340 LNG transits, up<br \/>\nfrom 181 transits in 2017.
