Mr. Vasquez will take office on September 5, 2019, succeeding current Administrator Jorge L. Quijano, who concludes his seven-year term at the helm of the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made by<br \/>\nthe Board of Directors in accordance to an independent, transparent and<br \/>\nrigorous process mandated by the Panamanian Constitution and Organic Law of the<br \/>\nPanama Canal Authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the Panama Canal Authority\u2019s autonomous<br \/>\ninstitutional process, the Board of Directors developed its evaluation criteria<br \/>\nbased upon an analysis of the Panama Canal\u2019s vision, mission, values, strategic<br \/>\nobjectives and challenges for the coming years,\u201d said Roberto Roy, Chairman of<br \/>\nBoard of Directors and Minister for Canal Affairs. \u201cAfter months of undergoing<br \/>\nthis strategic planning process, the Board of Directors determined that Mr.<br \/>\nVasquez has the expertise needed to lead the waterway through its next era of<br \/>\ngrowth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Vasquez has more than 30 years of experience in financial<br \/>\nand international capital market management and in the public sector. He served<br \/>\nas Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of Panama Canal Board of Directors<br \/>\n(2004-2006), deputy administrator (2000-2004) and finance director (1996-2000)<br \/>\nfor the waterway, playing a role in laying the groundwork for the Panama Canal<br \/>\nExpansion Program. Recently, he served as General Electric\u2019s executive director<br \/>\n(2013-2015), vice president, and CEO for Central America and the Caribbean<br \/>\n(2008-2011).<\/p>\n<p>He has a PhD in Managerial Economics and a Master\u2019s Degree in<br \/>\nOperations Research and Statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He<br \/>\nalso has a Master\u2019s Degree in Economics from North Carolina State University.<\/p>\n<p>To guarantee a smooth succession, Mr. Vasquez will soon begin a<br \/>\ntransition period under the careful guidance of Administrator Quijano, who will<br \/>\nbe retiring after more than 40 years in the waterway. Over the next few months,<br \/>\nMr. Vasquez will join key upcoming conversations with stakeholders and observe<br \/>\nday-to-day activities to adapt to his new role<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to ensuring that Mr. Vasquez acquires the<br \/>\nknowledge and expertise required for a smooth transition,\u201d said Administrator<br \/>\nQuijano. \u201cAs was the case during past transition periods, we can assure the<br \/>\nmaritime community that the waterway will continue to offer uninterrupted,<br \/>\nreliable and safe service to its customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Vasquez will become the fourth Panamanian Administrator of<br \/>\nthe waterway shortly before it celebrates its 20th year under<br \/>\nPanamanian administration on December 31, 2019. Past Panamanian Administrators<br \/>\ninclude Jorge Quijano (2012-2019), Alberto Aleman Zubieta (1996-2012) and<br \/>\nGilberto Guardia (1990-96), who was the Administrator of the Panama Canal<br \/>\nCommission, the U.S. federal agency that operated the Canal until 1999.<\/p>\n<p>The Panama Canal Board of Directors, also in compliance with the<br \/>\nConstitution and the Organic Law, announced the appointment of Mrs. Ilya Espino<br \/>\nde Marotta as the next Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal. Mrs. Espino de<br \/>\nMarotta will take office in January 2020, when the current Deputy Administrator<br \/>\nManuel Benitez retires after more than 40 years with the Panama Canal. Mr.<br \/>\nBenitez will also closely accompany Administrator Quijano in the transition<br \/>\nprocess.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Espino de Marotta began her career in the waterway in 1985<br \/>\nand has more than 30 years of experience at the Panama Canal. She was recently<br \/>\nappointed Vice President of Transit Business and led the Panama Canal Expansion<br \/>\nProgram as Executive Vice President for Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Espino de Marotta<br \/>\nearned a degree in Marine Engineering from Texas A&amp;M University. She and a<br \/>\nMaster\u2019s degree in Economic Engineering from the Universidad Santa Mar\u00eda La<br \/>\nAntigua in Panama City, Panama.
