Moody’s Reaffirms Panama Canal’s A2 Long-Term Rating with Stable Outlook<\/span><\/p>\n

Panama City, Panama, December 14, 2018<\/strong> — Moody\u2019s Investors Service reaffirmed the Panama Canal Authority\u2019s
\n(ACP) A2 long-term rating with a stable outlook, based on its distinctive
\nposition as an infrastructure asset with a unique geographic advantage and
\nbusiness model, and its strong historical operational and financial
\nperformance.<\/p>\n

According to Moody\u2019s, the ACP\u2019s strong financial performance has resulted
\nin better than anticipated financial metrics, driven by the successful
\noperations of the Expanded Panama Canal. The credit rating agency noted the
\nCanal\u2019s strong operating track record and robust growth after the Expansion.
\nFactoring into its decision, Moody\u2019s cited \u201cthe Canal\u2019s unique role in
\nwaterborne trade especially for the container cargo Northeast Asia-US East
\nCoast route and its ensured long-term viability as a result of the Expansion
\nProgram\u2019s completion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce again the credit rating agency confirms the great operational and
\nfinancial strength of the Canal and recognizes that the robust institutional
\nstructure and governance continue to be key to the success of the Panama Canal
\nAuthority,\u201d said Panama Canal Vice President of Finance Francisco J.
\nMiguez.<\/p>\n

Moody\u2019s also takes into account the clear legal framework that creates a
\nreliable and stable operating environment, \u201cas well as the ACP\u2019s long
\ntrack record of very strong operating and financial performance that has
\nwithstood financial downturns and kept pace with global seaborne trade
\ngrowth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The credit rating agency noted that the Canal has demonstrated resiliency in
\ntimes of economic downturn. Moody\u2019s highlighted that \u201cdespite macroeconomic
\nfactors, such as sluggish economic global performance, tariff disputes, and a
\nlow demand for raw materials in Latin America and Asia, that could negatively
\nimpact the canal\u2019s operations, Moody\u2019s estimates tonnage to continue increasing
\nduring 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

In August, Fitch Ratings affirmed the ACP \u2018A\u2019 investment grade rating with a
\nstable outlook for its long-term issuer default rating and its senior unsecured
\nnotes. In July, Standard & Poor\u2019s (S&P) Global Ratings improved the
\nCanal\u2019s outlook from \u2018stable\u2019 to \u2018positive,\u2019 and also affirmed its \u2018A-\u2018 rating
\nof the waterway.<\/p>\n
